HISTORY

In then year 1971 Spain was living under the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. This complicated matters in respect of outside countries wishing to do commercial business with this enigmatic country. However many countries persevered and it was obvious that different nationalities living in other countries would eventually meet. Valencia was of no exception. British residential businessmen in Valencia eventually came into contact with each other and began meeting up, particularly at meal times. And thus the 'English Speaking Businessman's Luncheon club came into being. As it was contrary to Spanish law, at that time, to form any sort of club or have meetings in public of more than three persons, the founding members took it in turns to select various venues for their lunchtime get-together. There were no administrative rules, no secretary and no contributions etc., and each member took the responsibility of selecting a restaurant and informing the rest of the group. Now 48 years afterwards this exceptional group still exists. Obviously without the initial restrictions we still gather on the last Friday of each month, apart from August, and will continue to do so. And so now a very warm welcome is extended to everyone who is interested to receive an invitation to join this very special group.
